And here's why:
This is the first CD I ever owned: a split single of Bryan Adam's 'Summer of 69' and Police's 'Message in a Bottle' I liberated it from the Rice Krispies box it was imprisoned in, put it in my parents computer and listened to it on repeat while I played Minesweeper and Tempest for hours at a time. This went on for the better part of a year, until our family computer got upgraded and I bought Smash Mouth's classic 'Astro Lounge' with whatever money I made from mowing our lawn.
I think Message in a bottle is my favorite song, sheerly based on the fact that it is so ingrained in my memory from the countless repetitions blasted into my ears from those tinny, abrasive, mind-scouring, 1990s stock computer speakers.
Honestly, I am surprised that these two songs wound up on separate playlists yesterday (though, I am glad they both lead off their own). I would think that after hearing one follow the other for so long that I would immediately associate the two, but I don't. Instead, I mostly forgot about Bryan Adams as I grew up. I don't have any particularly fond memories of listening to 'Summer of 69' either. I certainly don't hate it, but I don't crank it when it comes on the radio. That is probably why it wound up on a playlist with a bunch of terrible or forgettable songs.
I do however, remember how much my melancholy little nine or ten-year-old little heart identified with that castaway's sad, but hopeful memoir of life on the island lost at sea as I navigated my way through minefields and fought back hordes of alien spaceships.
Please enjoy a short but sweet playlist with sweet reggae overtones, lead off by my favorite song of all time
